Beyond the Glow: Your Guide to Skin Health this May

As the calendar turns to May, the global medical community shifts its focus to Skin Cancer Awareness Month. Here in Nairobi, where the sun is constant and the UV index often climbs to extreme levels, this conversation isn’t just relevant, it is essential.

At Shabaha Cancer Centre, we often encounter a common myth: “My skin is dark, so I am protected.” As oncologists in Nairobi, Kenya, we are here to clear the air. While melanin provides a natural defense, it is not a suit of armor. Skin cancer affects every skin tone, and when it is overlooked, it can be aggressive.

This May, we invite you to look closer at the skin you’re in.

The African Sun: A Unique Challenge

Living near the equator means we are exposed to high-intensity ultraviolet (UV) radiation year-round. This radiation causes DNA damage in skin cells that can accumulate over decades.

For our patients in Kenya, skin cancer often presents differently. We specifically look for Acral Lentiginous Melanoma (ALM) – a type of skin cancer that appears on the palms of the hands, the soles of the feet, or under the nails. Because these areas are often ignored during a routine glance in the mirror, diagnosis often happens later than it should.

Precision Care at Shabaha: How We Fight Back

If you notice a changing mole or a non-healing sore, the path to recovery at Shabaha is built on precision and speed. We offer a suite of advanced treatments designed to protect your health and your appearance:

  • Targeted Therapy: For advanced cases, we use medicines that “seek and destroy” specific molecules within cancer cells. This limits damage to the healthy skin surrounding the site.
  • Immunotherapy: By “re-training” your immune system, we help your body recognize skin cancer cells as invaders. This is a revolutionary option for melanomas that were previously difficult to treat.
  • Precision Radiotherapy (VMAT/IMRT): If surgery isn’t the best option for a specific area, our advanced radiotherapy planning ensures that radiation is delivered with sub-millimeter accuracy, sparing as much healthy tissue as possible.

Your 3-Step “Sun-Smart” Checklist

Prevention is the most powerful tool in our kit. This month, we challenge you to adopt these three habits:

  1. The Monthly Check: Once a month, perform a “head-to-toe” exam. Use a mirror for your back and don’t forget to check between your toes and your scalp. Look for the ABCDEs: Asymmetry, irregular Borders, varying Colors, Diameter larger than a pencil eraser, and Evolving (changing) shape.
  2. The 10 AM to 4 PM Rule: Seek shade when the sun is at its peak. If you are outdoors, a wide-brimmed hat and UV-protective sunglasses are your best friends.
  3. Broad-Spectrum Protection: Apply a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day, even when it’s cloudy in Nairobi.
